Default Aloha from a Hawaiian Pilot

Well friends, it looks like we will be working together in the not too distant future! I'm excited about the possibility, because I'm a Hawaiian Pilot that has been commuting from PDX.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about Alaska Airlines. I was hoping we could start a discussion about general morale, the new(ish) contract, work rules and anything else you want to get off your chest re: our new pilot group.

Mahalo,
M

Congrats, you just won the lifestyle lottery.

The new contract has turned out just fine, with snap up clauses. PBS is around the corner.

Are they going to merge certificates? Seniority lists?

In general, 1 + 1 never = 2. It is often less than that...and with AK Hawwaii presence, I can't see them continuing to overlap routes/schedules.
If there is an Air Group that knows how to whipsaw and exploit seperate labor groups, it is Alaska.

I hope i am wrong, but I don't see this as a good thing for labor at either company.

Yes, announcement said merger, which is probably required by scope anyway. Separate brands, common sales platform.

That's the norm, at least to a degree.

Could be a lot worse. In this case I think geography alone will minimize conflict. People in HI want to be there. People not in HI mostly don't want to be there.

Ultimately it will be up to the company to try to grow the whole thing, which I'm sure they intend to do.

Now I would have been *really* worried if they announced that they were going to sunset the HAL brand

A great way to start things out. Nice post! PDX is our most senior base. Hopefully you'll do well in the SLI.

Overall I'm happy here.

Alaska is normally very financially conservative. So the main concern for me with a move this big is how it will shake out financially...

You will love being based in PDX. My friends who are based there say it's great.

General moral is pretty good. We have our share of "burn it to the ground" people, as well as "this is the best place ever". The truth is in the middle, and most of us are optimistic. Contract is still in the implementation stages, so some things are better, and some will get better, but it can always improve.

Welcome to our dysfunctional family.

Thanks for the welcome, I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone here.

Is there somewhere I could find the new Alaska contract? I would love to read up on it. Also, does this mean our combined pilot group will have to negotiate a whole new collective contract? I'm fairly new to the airline life - I would love to hear from more you more experienced guys how you think this might play out, nuts and bolts wise.

It probably won't matter for at least 2 years. Likely 3-5.

Yes, there will be a Joint Collectve Bargaining Agreement that both pilot groups will get to vote on. This will become the new contract for both groups.
