How is more subcontracting a good thing?

You wouldn't go to any AS base if you were commuting across the country. If you are commuting, it doesn't matter what base you go to if you don't live in base. SFO can be sustainable but when the newest pilots leave for other airlines, and those same new pilots are all going to SFO, of course SFO will continually be understaffed.

I have been converted every day this month. I usually bid lines but needed to bid reserve to ensure some days off and I totally forgot to do SRB and got hit with convertible LCR. I live local so it is fine. I am not sure how pilots are gaming the system here. DMs email made it seem like they need you to call out sick 3 days before you get the sniffles, so they can plan properly. SCR is going more senior with some pilots not being able to hold it in certain bases. Is the issue of not having enough SCR? If LCR pilots getting converted to SCR aren't showing up, and are not in position, then write them up. Why are we getting an email talking about downgrades if the reserve system isn't fixed? How does making fewer pilots fix a staffing issue?
This was a bizarre email from every angle.

I never said SFO was not sustainable. I said it wasn't sustainable at the size management was planning. 200/seat is probably the sweet spot unless we start really growing and can offer seniority progression on par with the big 3. Even at that size we have struggled to keep 200 FOs in SFO.
It’s still a relatively competitive market for a company whose only growth is Cali westward.

Yeah, it was weird. Kind of mixed signals. On the one hand, I see his point: You're at a major airline and reserve shouldn't be a brand new concept. Get your $hit together. On the other hand, we're so overstaffed that someone being out of position puts the entire operation at extreme risk? We're so overstaffed that we need to displace FOs to SFO and and backfill with downgrades? We're so overstaffed that reduced lines are only offered to FOs in ANC? I'm not follwing the logic. I'm trying to say this respectfully as I've felt like DM has been pretty good so far. I'm just kind of confused by this. I mean, I'm a lineholder living in base, so I'm not really in the target audience, but it would be good to have a little clarification.

Gonna be tough. Almost all our bases are in cities/states people are either fleeing or never wanted to live in and, because we just barely touch any cities East of the Rockies anyone does live in, it makes for a difficult commute.

Yes Delta. Not sure why he says "tried", Delta was there for several decades. The only reason it went away is from the merger and Detroit and Nashville became more important, otherwise it was a sizable base including Comair. It's a good mid west base outside of Chicago, Detroit or Indy.
