If we are cancelling flights and being over staffed the way we are, has NOTHING to do with Pilots calling in sick but every bit with Crew Scheduling.
Let’s call it what it is…

It's 100% this. If you look at the reserve reports, you'll see there clearly aren't enough short call reserves each day. Maybe it works out sometimes.

Agreed, no clue why downgrades are being bandied about. Either offer more SC lines, convert more LC to SC, or add more reserve lines. They are penny pinching as per usual. PBS growing pains go both ways. Also with hiring slow everywhere right now I think it would be easy to staff SFO by running a new hire class or two.

It sounds like Alaska is starting to have an influence over here at HA…there is talk of a displacement bid coming out soon. I’m assuming they are trying to lean things out with an impending approval…

We aren't overstaffed. That is the problem. Can't say we are overstaffed and then complain we don't have coverage. That email was so weird. Are you blaming the pilot group for staffing issues? System bids would properly staff the bases, for instance, SEA reserve coverage is absolutely hot garbage.

Sounds like the issue is LCR pilots not being available per the rules. Maybe some gaming the new system? I don't think they are over-staffed on reserves, since they allowed only a handful of VLOA's in specific base/seat.

I have been converted every day this month. I usually bid lines but needed to bid reserve to ensure some days off and I totally forgot to do SRB and got hit with convertible LCR. I live local so it is fine. I am not sure how pilots are gaming the system here. DMs email made it seem like they need you to call out sick 3 days before you get the sniffles, so they can plan properly. SCR is going more senior with some pilots not being able to hold it in certain bases. Is the issue of not having enough SCR? If LCR pilots getting converted to SCR aren't showing up, and are not in position, then write them up. Why are we getting an email talking about downgrades if the reserve system isn't fixed? How does making fewer pilots fix a staffing issue?

This was a bizarre email from every angle.

So let me get this straight. We couldn't staff SFO when we were running classes weekly, but now 1 or 2 more classes will somehow do the trick? Sound logic.

It is sound logic when attrition has gone from 20 a month to darn near zero.

So you son't think more people would bail if they were stuck in SFO in perpetuity? I'm still not sure that's sound logic. Also attrition has slowed because hiring slowed. We're not hiring people that want to be elsewhere because we're not hiring.
