System displacements and downgrades are somehow viewed as a better solution than hiring to cover a base shortfall?

L O freaking L.

It needs to be restated that all of this is Boeing's fault. Everyone should get to keep their seat and we should be invoicing Boeing monthly for the expense.

Wait so am I hearing Alaska pilots accusing the acquired of being overstaffed and hurting the SLI process for them when they actually are over staffed themselves?

Not starting anything, but worth taking a look in the mirror for those who are coming into this integration with that mindset.

I see the logic, but these kinds of moves are a downward spiral.

You know what's funny? There's an easy answer to a right seat shortage -- hiring.
I can see them also displacing ANC FOs as they are overstaffed like sfo ca

no we got a email about reserves calling out sick after getting an assignment and they said if it keeps up they might have to do a position bid or even downgrade

I’ll review my post, but I’m pretty sure I didn’t say anything about the possible merger with Hawaiian. That said if the merger is approved you can count on plenty of stagnation, Alaska is vastly over staffed presently, I have no idea what staffing is like at Hawaiian. I do know that if the merger proceeds that the combined company will be over staffed because mergers are not 1+1=2, more like 1+1=1.25 maybe. That’s before you factor in the likely fleet type reductions.

This is hyperbole. Some bases and positions yes. Some others, no.

Most of the network is actually right-sized.

Not directed at you at all. Just a common theme I’m seeing and hearing. Everything you say here is true. Our only true growth is a molasses 787 ramp up and Amazon a/c we are nearly staffed for. Fleet reductions will absolutely cause overstaffing.

We're never going to be able to hire enough to staff SFO at the level they want. Why is this hard to understand? If you lived in or near SFO would you want to work at Alaska? People who come to work for us don't want to be based in SFO for the most part. Sure there's outliers, but trying to grow SFO the way they wanted was always a fool's errand.

I disagree. The Seattle centric bias needs to die if we're going to have any chance of making it as a larger, international airline.

L O freaking L. Even though we're adding widebody flying it will be a long time, if ever, that we can offer the kind of progression that United does. I don't disagree that the Seattle-centric mindset needs to die, but we aren't gonna compete for pilots with United in the Bay area for a long time, if ever. We need more bases somewhere off the left coast to really start competing with anyone.
