From what I understand they were in talks with United, but at the eleventh hour everything fell apart.

Rumor is that the DOJ was close to approving the deal but at the last minute they changed their mind and demanded some concessions, that's the reason for the delay.

Rumor is that the DOJ was close to denying the deal outright but at the last minute Alaska managed to change the DOJ's mind and now they're back to negotiating, that's the reason for the delay.
