The science of management (bean counting). That's certainly the history.
But the best road to success is actually art AND science... the art is in the intangible hard-to-quantify human factors. Such as the future retention and recruiting impact of goodwill, or badwill.
The art component has to be carefully constrained though. Too much of that gets you way out on a limb where 5% succeed in a spectacular fashion and earn the "visionary" honorific. While the other 95% fail spectacularly.

There are no vacancies right now. Alaska always reduces the bit afterwards to clean up the vacancies. This is the real problem with the way we do bidding here. 3-4 bids a yea maximum and we really don't have an idea of the demand for a base in a given seat as the vacancies are deleted.

They have another option too... let folks bid where they want (aside from ANC) and then build the trips to cover the SFO flying from other bases. They can readily do that from most of the other bases, but ANC is probably too far with limited trips to the lower 48. Might even help retention if folks can live where they want to (or not live where they don't want to).

I should have said this in the first place: Just because they "cleaned up" vacancies doesn't mean they don't need bodies there.

It would make longer trips though, and the majority want shorter 1- and 2-days. I would rather get more productive and longer duration trips.

This is the right way. Have a larger portion of ANC trips start with the first leg to SEA and enter the system that way. Have some more PDX and LAX trips start by going to SFO and then flying more. Sounds like a great way to tack more credit onto a transcon. Not DHs, which we have seen some of when SFO is short staffed. Build it into the flying schedule.

So if this means no downgrades which has come up more than once this year on company communications. This rumor would result in 25 ANC based FOs bidding for SEA logically as it would be the shortest commute for ANC FOs who live in ANC. That means the 25 most JR FOs in SEA will get bumped down to SFO.

Really you believe this crap… LCA, oh my really, tell me more. All of that is absolute garbage. I have heard talk of FO TDY in SFO. I was asked about my thoughts on a SFO fix in early June. I told him, I would close the base and shift the flying to SEA, LAX, and PDX… at first I got a funny look, I got a text a few days latter, planning is now crunching numbers on the idea. I think 60/40 chance SFO could close 2/1/25… That is not a joke, that is not garbage!
Remember when you were all about SFO closing and then they doubled the base size?
I do. You're full of sh*t and always have been.
