Default Open time

Interested In coming to Alaska, would anyone be able to tell me if there is a lot of “open time” available to pick up trips? And if so does it usually pay 150 or 200%?

it depends on which base and for now which aircraft your are on. As long as your aren’t too pick you can fly max in the small bases but you’ll probably wind up with some all nighters and less desirable trips. If you are in Seattle you can basically fly as much as you want between open time and pilot to pilot give always.

Some of the open time is occasionally designated as premium ahead of time but that’s something that I’ve only seen on the last 6 months or so. I think scheduling is doing that to shore up staffing on some days where it isn’t looking good. For the most part though it’s all straight time.

Reserves can not “ pick-up” open time and there are few avenues for a reserve to get paid outside of guarantee. As a junior line holder having a legal hole to pick up open time is difficult at best. Premium open time is less than .5% of all open time. What the new contract brings is anyones guess but Alaska Airlines has always and will always wring every drop out of its pilots and nothing in the TA will change that..:Plan on earning your living at this airline from block time flown

Thanks everyone for the responses. Information is very helpful.

So probably plan on min guarantee, especially when on reserve? Or how many hours would a reserve or junior junior line holder credit ?

The current old contract, reserves can only pick up on vacation days for extra pay.

New contract and effective for Jan, reserves can pick up from opentime on days off for extra pay.

Before the previous LOA allowing reserves to pick up on their days off I regularly did so my first few years here. I would say picking up10 hours per month would be easy to do once the new LOA is active again.

For someone considering Alaska, is there any schedule flexibility once you are able to hold a line? I know some airlines you can drop and pick up trips. Does Alaska have this type of flexibility?

Those opportunities tend to be pretty limited by the staffing levels Alaska operates with.

It all depends on which month, which seat, and which base. Trading flexibility is all based on available reserve coverage so it varies. The other option is to give away trips pilot to pilot. For the most part I’ve always been able to get the time off I wanted within reason.
