There are politics involved everywhere. Yes, even at ALPA. Big surprise, eh. Just like 9mikemike said, smaller airlines are used as foundations for the big boys. Arm twisting is live and well. If you are ever “elected” into the inner circle of a union, you will be “educated” on its limitations. Our union and the membership can thump our chest all day long but airlines such as Alaska will never offer a career better than the big 3. We’re our own worst enemy. At the end of the day, it’s just business.
The excuse making knows no bounds.

That's a nice rewrite of history. No polling, nor Alyeska or APC that I can recall made references to slowing down and letting other airlines go first. It wasn't until the smell of a TA almost being here did people finally say, well, we don't really have a benchmark to know what "is" good for a hourly payrate.
Imagine pattern bargaining is like a 4x100m relay. You don't lead off with your slowest runner, nor do you anchor with your slowest. Optimally, you place them somewhere in the middle.
Alaska has the most ground to gain in this race, and it will be less than optimal for them to start first.
We'll see soon enough if we achieve parity+, but we are running a risk of being left behind by faster runners by going first.
Also, the pilot shortage is recession proof.

Your memory is failing in your old age. The first 6 pages of this very thread are dedicated to "slowing down." Also, why would anyone complain about going first before it was obvious that we were going first?
There are some gems back there seen through the lens of hindsight.

Anyway, April 1 was the march and Sept 1 the new payrates were effective.

He didn’t tho. The mods stopped any discussion about what it’s really like to work on the hiring thread. Then moved a bunch of posts to a new thread, this one. When most of us were still gloating about our new contract.

The point is that there was plenty of people saying to slow down. You can read the first 6 pages of this thread to review.
And there are some really good and really awful takes in there in hindsight.
