Say's a guy who's never conducted a FCF flight after a heavy check.

I have actually, and after dual engine change. Like I said, it’s just basic rocket science. Follow the checklist, do your job.

A couple things about our (UA) test, tech and engineering folks. They do much more than just tests after heavy checks. They also fly air shows as well as assist OEMs with their test campaigns (we are one of only a couple airlines in the world that do this). Additionally, any post-maintenance flights are required to be put into open time for line folks to pick up, but since we are not trained for those flights, we are immediately bought off and they are assigned to the tech folks. It can be pretty lucrative because the planes that go to Asia for heavy checks are often routed on 6 or 7 day trips. Occasionally getting the planes to or from maintenance will be flown by line pilots, but not the actual post-maintenance check flights.

Like I said, you've never done or been trained for that kind of work. But in your mind.....

Airlines which do MX at night so they can have the plane in revenue service in the morning.

BTDT (Brand X), I drew the line at MVFR.

there is no added risk. That is my point, you make it sound like you need to be a world renowned test pilot to run a checklist. Anyone who is a qualified pilot could run an FCF checklist.

If we didn’t have an FCF department line pilots would have the opportunity to fly these and get paid more.
I've done it, and I'd rather not do it again as a line pilot.

I'd be happy to join the FCF crew, if I lived close to the airport. Having two experienced pilots with their head in the systems makes a difference for my personal comfort level.

It's true that most such flights are non-events. Most.

They are non-events, until they are not. That is where two FCF pilots really matter.

Thoughts on this fleet mix quote from Ben?

“Everything is open at this point ... we are going to do what is best for Alaska long term, in terms of fleet mix"

I hope it's more than lip service. Single fleet efficiencies are lost when these things keep happening.
