Now for Pacific Rim destinations, sure. But Europe? I kinda don't see it...
Thank you.

I'll bet you $1 we see 787s in SEA going to Asia first, but then Europe, probably LHR and CDG.

Those HNL routes currently served end up bypassing it.

I actually do see it.

They tried with oneworld. But it turns out the partners prioritize their own brand pax. If you really want to provide good international service to AS pax, you have to do it yourself (if you don't want NWA to do it for you).

I even experienced it myself, since I have points I tried AS/oneworld... tried to sell me a three-leg from SEA to a major euro hub via AA and some euro ULCC. Points or cash, that was the only oneworld option. Knowing that a euro flag carrier went direct, I just bought a ticket on them. They're oneworld too, but apparently not accessible via that path.

Yeah if they're going to own and operate them anyway, eventually they'll take a shot at SEA to LHR/CDG/AMS/FRA. Assuming they can get slots. Or maybe reliever airports.

The SEA-centric worldview would not allow them not to.

Now I don't see it turning into anything huge, not giving the big three any run for their money at least not this century.

Yup, I completely agree with this...

Agreed, I don't see AS continuing much of the HNL-Japan market after all the losses HA has taken. Japan won't recover for a long time and the holes in the boat need to be plugged.

the Japan market is returning at a pretty good pace now. It would be criminal to give up those gate slots. I’m 90% positive that you can’t just move those slots to different departure cities either. The Hawaiian brand is also very strong in The Japan market. Which is why I believe Alaska management when they say they plan on keeping the Hawaiian brand.

HA tickets sold in Japan are purchased in Yen which is roughly at 145. Also, pre-COVID, Japanese arrivals to Hawaii were roughly about 7k a day, today we average 2-3k a day. Almost a 50% drop in Japanese arrivals now add the Yen equation, and it is a losing market which is why we are here. At some point, HA needs to cut their losses and stop hoping the market will come back.

AS historically will not hold onto a losing hand for very long.

But this is a pretty big acquisition they've made, so presumably they have a plan to try and make it work as opposed to sounding the retreat immediately.

Before we start, this is apples to oranges to VX... they're buying HA for growth so they don't squeezed out in the long run or end up on the wrong side of an acquisition that would eliminate the brand and SEA HQ jobs. So logically they need to have a go at making it work. Keeping the HA brand is a major tell.

Anyone know the load factors AVG on the interisland SWA flights vs the HA 717s? Curious to see what SWA thinks of of all this.
