Newsflash: every airline, literally every airline, is cutting some major block hours for Jan and Feb.
Actually my comment was in reference not to softening demand, cutting block hours, etc, but to the ridiculous “incentives” they are offering to try to get people to take an LOA. Anyhow, I think your position is clear, you are content at Alaska Airlines, good for you.

It's the typical myopic view that AS is known for. You know that if they extend it to february, that they are going to be BEGGING for everyone to work come March. This company doesnt like reserves doing what reserves are supposed to do. Everyone I know who was on LCR the last few months have been converted to SCR at least 2-3 times a month, just to sit in a hotel room/crashpad and not work.

They cant stand having Q1 losses, so this is the immediate reaction to scrounge a bit of cash and appease Wall St. . Any kind of major weather event in Jan/Feb will completely negate this plan.

MGMT- ZOMGGGGG WE ARE OVERSTAFFED FOR 2 MONTHS AND NEED TO CUT COSTS!!!!......LOA'S NOWWW!!!
ALPA- Well.....hey, slow down there turbo......theres a few ways we can mitigate this....
MGMT- NAOOOOOOO!!!! LOA'S NOWWWWW!!!

::Epic Q1 WX Event::

MGMT- HALLLLLPPPPPPPPP WE ARE SHORT STAFFED AND CREWS ARE DISPLACED ALL OVER THE COUNTRY
ALPA- Yeah..........we told you this was gonna happen....
MGMT- WELL CAN YOU HELP US??????
ALPA- Well we can't now....you made the decision without our input.....
MGMT- CRAP!!!!! Ok.....ok.......ummmm.....make a webcast placing blame on one C suite executive......have them own it.....apologize....then forgive themselves.....

I wouldn't call it ridiculous. Significant time off, without quiting your job or losing seniority, and with benefits?

There have been times in my life when I would have taken it.

If you just want to hang out at home and do projects, then bid reserve, get paid, and probably not work. But if you want to travel, this could be a nice deal.

It may actually not be kosher if they offered it without an LOA from the union, that's another issue that I'll leave for the union to resolve.

I'm guessing there was not any ALPA coordination, seeing as there was no mention in yesterday's ALPA update and there is not an MOU or LOA. The CP email that went out left me with a ton of questions.

yeah. I had just read the ALPA email when I saw the post about the LOA. Went back a reread ALPA email and didn’t see it. Then went to find my iPad and check the work email and there is was. Timing is suspect!!!

Prediction: There will be a ton of preimium when it snows. Or is even foggy.

We have had terrible performances during the time I've been here every winter, every single time it snowed. Dozens of premium trips a day or more.

Why not just be over staffed during one of our 3 problem months? When there is the chance it will snow in SEA and completely disrupt our operation.

Exactly!......every winter ive been here has resulted in a time period of "unprecedented winter weather". I never could comprehend how we (MGMT) act like its the first time we've ever seen snow....every single time.....

The irony is not lost on the fact that an airline with an Eskimo on the tail, craps the bed during winter IROPS. 😂

IDK what is going on with people in the PNW, specifically SEA but every single time it snows I hear: "wow this really only happens once in 10 years!" I don't even bother responding anymore but it has happened every single winter I have been in the SEA area. Without fail. Most winters at least twice. At least for a week or so it is extremely difficult to drive around or even get to work because there is almost no snow removal capabilities and no one knows what they are doing. This isn't just at my place of employment but everyone I know in the area. How can something that happens every winter be unprecidented?

Every winter I have been here the operation melts down at least once per winter. More minor snow events result in a massive number of premium trips flooding into open time. Wouldn't it just be cheaper to be over staffed and just let the operation have adiquate reserves?

I know, I know: "Thinking hurts the team."

If they did it different they wouldn’t be able to recycle the emails and press releases explaining how there’s no way they saw it coming.

a blind man could smell that coming.

as stupid as the LOA offer is at least they didn’t offer us a flow to PSA with a follow on to AA. At least the didn’t say hey, you can take a year off with no pay or be fired (United Airlines) there are worse options out there.
