All this complaining about 12 day off lines, yet, every single one of them gets bid. Even 11 day off lines get taken.
There was a time a few years ago in SFO CA, Aug 2019 I think, where several lines went un-bid. Just flat out rejected by all bidding pilots. Some commented on Alyeska that they had never seen that before, an outright rejection of lines. It was about 5 or 6 lines that were not bid on.

Lol I can't figure out what point you're trying to make by saying this... the punishment (yes, at this company it's a punishment) for not getting awarded a line is reserve. Of course they all get bid. Am I missing something

The only thing worse than our lines is open flying. The only thing that is worse than that is reserve.
If you don’t turn in your medical on time. Even hours late your line gets taken away. The punishment is reserve.

Open flying is worse? Depends. I often get more days off in OF than regular line (for when I can hold a line, back on rsv next month). In September, i think half the base had 15 days off or less. I got an OF line with 16 days off. I know some people that purposefully skip regular line bidding and go for OF lines. I assume it’s because they do better than they would with regular lines.

Mostly to avoid red eyes.
For those not familiar the open flying lines are built with the literal leftovers from the line bidding.
Occasionally they can be better. Occasionally being quite generous. If you have interests in your life other than flying airplanes it’s harder to get specific days off. There are less open flying lines and people who bid down to OF.
This summer I thought about it. There were 10 people senior to me bidding OF and 3 lines with the days off I needed.

I don’t mind the out and back red eyes if I can get the ones that are efficient (as much as they can be here) with short layovers. The ones tacked on to multi day trips seem to suck cause they usually have a huge a## layover somewhere to swap zones to day flying. With my seniority in ANC (20yrs) I usually get my 15-20ish choice of line. I bid reserve every few months with an occasional open flying line. I have to be cautious thou, sometimes the usual cadre of senior guys bid OF/reserve and sometimes it doesn’t work out. Due to our situation of having no scope I’m curious how this reopening of the Horizon ANC base is going to change the pairings or possibly reduce the base. The company and JL said it will not……yeahhhhhhhhhh. Only a fool would believe their propaganda
It’s all the roll of the dice……
