We will need around 800-1000 pilots for UA. We have about 500 currently. For simple math let's assume it's a 50/50 split so we have 250 FOs and 250 CAs.
If we are going to increase from 500 pilots to 800 we will need another 150 CAs and 150 FOs.
If we have 250 FOs now, and we need to make 150 of them CAs over the next two years; the majority of current FOs will be CAs. We have a bunch of 5 year FOs then some 4, then a large gap between 4 and 1-2 year FOs. Once the 4-5 year guys upgrade, the number will drop towards the 2+ year FOs and continue to shrink as the upgrades continue.
If we grow to 1000 pilots again, this will be even more pronounced. You have to look at the entire group. Yes there are 5 year FOs but not for long.
When I upgraded it went from 7-8 year FOs to 4 year FOs in 3 months of continuous upgrading.

It's very simple.

Thank you for the breakdown, I see it the same way. I am sure the sign on bonus is working, I accepted for many reasons, QOL, Pay, Contract, Upgrade time ect. The rest of the regional airlines are projecting 1000 new hires in one year where Air Wis is only looking to do half that it 2 years, along with a package that is very competitive in the regional market. We have to know it is possible and a jet driver like me with no 121 time would like to see it happen just like everyone else.
It starts with getting a new contract that will help us recruit qualified candidates. The bonuses are drawing plenty of pilots, but only 15 have made it off IOE since the United announcement in late February.
Once we begin to recruit more pilots then we lose, the movement will be consistent and moral will improve. Until then we have to wait and see what Appleton wants to do.

Would the 50 aircraft with options for 65 be because of staffing? Just a guess, ramp up hiring to staff all 65, no problem. I was interviewed with 10 and the next day I read a gouge on pilot interviews.com the person said they had 12, just give it some time. It takes people time to figure out if a career move is going to be the right move, its only been a few months.

One of them paid for my dinner on a recent overnight.
They know they won't be able to upgrade until the company can get more FOs. Meanwhile they all seem to be enjoying their QOL

The company sits here and advertises this 18 month upgrade yet the reality is, it's not going to happen. The united announcement came out over a month ago and the latest vacancy with staffing dates into november has zero upgrades. Ask the guys hired two years ago who were told to expect a 24 month upgrade how that's working out. In reality they will be lucky to upgrade in 18 months.

IIRC AWAC had ~850 pilots when they had 88 airplanes operating for United. Now it's 65 airplanes... guessing with 117 they probably need around 700 to feel comfortable, however my guess is they'll end up with ~650.
How do block hours for United compare to the recent hours under AA? That's a better indicator of how many guys are needed.
That being said take a risk and roll the dice, they might get more airplanes as XJT winds down.
