I'd have to look it up but the owners of AWAC made something like $300 million on their initial "investment" in US Airways back in 2005. They sold their stock as soon as they could and got out.
AWAC as a company is continually bled dry and has very little in their checking account. The owners take their profits and keep little in cash for the company to operate on. This means that although AWAC has a large liability (aircraft leases), if they simply don't get paid anymore by AA they shut their doors and the aircraft get repossessed. Simple as that. There is no money to take because there is no money. Kinda like getting divorced and before the divorce moving all your money to a slush fund in the Caymans.
Contrast this with a company like SkyWest who had around $1b in their "checking" account at last glance. If they lose a contract but still have lease payments they have to keep making them.
What this means is if the owners can't secure a profitable contract I don't for a second believe they won't just shut the doors and walk away. They might try to sell off the pilot group as that actually has some value now (finally!). Alternatively AA won't be able to build up their WOs in time and may extend the contract on another limited basis and AWAC runs as a pinch hitter while the WOs continue to spool up.
Or another 9/11 happens, the wheels stop, and all of a sudden they are the lowest cost operator with plenty of pilots to staff and life goes on .
Place your bets...and I have no doubt those wanting to leave will have their chance in the coming year. AWAC has a great group of people, a great reputation in the industry for hiring good guys and a solid training department.

I'm not sure that the AA WOs will not be able to build up in time. PSA is opening the DCA base. They seem to be targeting AWAC's pilots with recruiting events at DCA next week (Envoy and PSA). Given the relatively small size of AWAC, I believe the AA WOs can cover the flying as AWACs loses its ability to with the pilot attrition.

Endeavor has recently been awarding captain positions to pilots with the minimum 121 time. There's been a few that were awarded captain while they were still in initial and it looks like it will continue for the foreseeable future. 9E also loves guys with prior CRJ time and there's been a pretty solid rumor we'll be opening an ATL base soon. PM me if anybody would like a referral or has questions.
